Masters Degree in Human Evolutionary Studies (MPhil)
This is a one-year course that combines specialist teaching and training in human evolution, with the opportunity to develop a small-scale individual research project. Emphasis is on developing skills across a range of disciplines, learning how to tackle major issues, and honing critical analytical skills. Above all, we aim to inspire enthusiasm for asking questions about how humans evolved. This course is ideal for those with a degree in anthropology, biology, archaeology, or another related field.
Research Masters (MPhil)
This is a one-year programme that involves developing a medium-scale individual research project which explores a topic in human evolution. Student research projects are usually based on data collected in the laboratory or museums, although participation in the Centre’s field projects is encouraged. It is ideal for those who have some background or experience in research in human evolution at undergraduate or graduate levels, and wish to pursue independent research.
PhD Programme
This is a three-year programme in which students have the opportunity of designing and developing a large-scale individual research project which explores a topic in human evolution. PhD student research projects can be based on data collected in the laboratory, museums or the field, depending on the nature of the topic. Students are also expected to acquire some basic teaching experience during the course of the programme. This degree provides students with the opportunity to be engaged in high-quality research that challenges existing views in the field.
All graduate research projects, independent of scale, are supervised by an academic member of the Centre, who provide support and advice from the point of project design, to its implementation, to the analysis and write-up of the thesis. Each student is appointed a research supervisor as soon as they start their course.
LCHES is located in Fitzwilliam Street in central Cambridge. The offices and laboratories in Fitzwilliam Street allow the allocation of a shared office with individual desks and computer facilities to all PhD students, and provide a number of well appointed in-house laboratories.
As part of the Faculty of Archaeology & Anthropology, LCHES enjoys the wonders of the Haddon Library, one of the world's most comprehensive teaching and research libraries in both archaeology and anthropology. As part of the Department of Biological Anthropology, LCHES members enjoy a thriving, highly-interdisciplinary research community, which has grown significantly in recent years, both in number of senior researchers and postgraduate students.
Funding
Prospectives graduate students have to secure funds to cover the University and College Fees, living expenses and research expenses. Several institutions
give graduate scholarships, which
will typically cover University and College fees, living expenses and contribute
towards research expenses through set bench fees. These are normally given to
individual students, but occasionally may be obtained by members of LCHES (in
which case they will be announced in this website).
